Llanrhidian Higher comprises the villages of Penclawdd with Crofty, Llanmorlais and Wernffrwd. Together, these make a vibrant community of north east Gower. Its history goes back to Tudor times when coal was first mined in the area. Penclawdd became a bustling port in the 17th and 18th centuries, exporting the local coal. By 1780 there were also brass and copper works in the village and, later, even a tinplate works. The community continued to grow until about 1900 by which time the best coal was worked out and the economic conditions did not favour the metal production of the village. Through all these times the iconic cockle gathering and processing has been carried on, giving a special character to the area.
Today, Llanrhidian Higher is an important residential area with a range of light and service industries, chiefly located in the Crofty Industrial Estate and in the heart of Penclawdd. Cockle gathering is still carried on. There is also much potential for leisure activity because of the proximity of the beautiful Burry Estuary.
